Military command and independence

George Washington served as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army throughout the American Revolutionary War. Despite overwhelming logistical challenges, harsh winters, and formidable opposing forces, his steadfast resolve and strategic retreats held the fragile colonial army together, culminating in victory at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781.

Architect of the presidency

Following the Constitutional Convention of 1787 over which he presided, Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States. He carefully shaped the executive branch, forming the presidential cabinet system and establishing the precedent of stepping down after two terms in office.
